Stephan Cox - Studio Art Glass

Black Vessel

16 inches tall
7.5 inches in diameter

Stephan J. Cox combines multiple techniques to create his glass sculptures. Inspired by futuristic forms, these wonderful, yet often whimsical shapes are blown in traditional hot glass fashion. Once they are annealed, they are lightly sandblasted which creates the soft hues that you see. Other pieces are carved using the sandblasting, diamond tooling and other cold working techniques. Each piece is a one of a kind.

Cox's work can be found in private and public collections throughout the world, including The Corning Museums of Glass, Corning, New York; The White House Ornament Collection, Washington, DC; Northrup Galleries, University of Minnesota; Wisconsin Veterans Home, King, Wisconsin; Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah. Additionally he has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards.

About his art, Cox states:
"I have been compelled to make things (drawing, painting, etc) ever since I can remember. In 1979 I was working on printmaking at the University of Wisconsin in River Falls. The glass shop was next door and I found myself drawn to that hot, high-energy environment and away from the print shop. The tricky molten material took over my life and since that time I have worked exclusively with hand-blown glass, and am involved in an ongoing study of the interplay of form, color, texture and light. Soon after I became proficient as a glassblower, I began carving on simple bowl and vase forms. I then moved on to series of more complex carved chalices and perfume vials and within the last few years have begun to design and carve much larger vessel forms. I am constantly searching for new ways to achieve these pieces as I envision them."

The carved and etched pieces have been treated lightly with mineral oil and may occasionally need to be re-oiled and buffed with a lint free cloth. (Do not use glass cleaner on oiled surfaces.)
