Wiley Jobe first entered the kaleidoscope arena in 1987. Quickly his interest turned from hobbyist/enthusiast to obsessive creator.
Dividing his time between restoring antique furniture and designing kaleidoscopes, Jobe has created very few but wonderful kaleidoscopes over the years. His emphasis has been on experimenting with optical illusions, specifically through the polyangular mirror system.
His first piece was titled The Victoria, which was soon followed by Polystar. In addition, he has created a few life-size pieces that stand over 5 feet tall.
In Reverie, Jobe combines cherry wood with ribbon mahogany accents. One is reminded of the old furniture Jobe so painstakingly restores.
Optically, two mirrors can be rotated from 0 to 90 degrees. You can control how simple or complex the image may be with a simple twist of the aperture at the viewing end.
An added surprise is found when you peek into Reverie. Jobe has masked the end of the mirror system with an abstract shape. The pattern and shape of the mask is altered when you change the angle between the mirrors.
Reverie measures 9" long" x 3" diameter" x 10" deep to handle. US$750
