Most artists, regardless of their selected medium, have a signature style. That is, once you are relatively familiar with their work you can begin to associate them to a specific piece, correctly identifying it as made by them.
Phil Coghill is one of those exceptions to this theory. Coghill has worked in stained glass and wood in such a variety of styles, that when you view his repertoire of work you are astounded that it is all made by the same hands and mind.
In Celestial Pilgrimage, Coghill employs an obtuse 3-mirror system. This yields a double image, each with 16 points.
What is really exciting is the two half-cylinders found at the end of the mirror-system. Coghill fuses whimsical shapes of jewel-toned glass and dichroic glass onto a panel of clear glass and a panel of white glass. The two panels are then slumped, creating the half-cylinders that you find on the scope. The depth of each piece plays an important role in the illusion. The image is not flat. You get an impression of something folding onto itself. it is really quite spectacular.
The cylinders are affixed to a rotating wheel. You will discover how complex the image is as you spend time with the scope.
A limited edition of five, Celestial Pilgrimage measures 13 3/4 inches tall" x 13 1/2 inches deep by 12 inches wide. US$1100.
