Jon Haven quickly mastered the techniques of mirror arrangements and has produced a small body of one-of-a-kind wood parlourscopes.
There are many elements in the Stardust that makes it such a success. When you first gaze upon it, its large scale catches tour attention.
Cherry is a beautiful wood with a luscious finish. The free-form design rests on an adjustable leg. This allows you to raise or lower the viewing angle of the piece.
Optically, Haven employs a 2-mirror, 25-degree system, creating a 7-point image. The mirrors are tapered on the chamber end. What you see is an inverted cone-shaped image. In other words, the image is not flat. It looks as though you are looking into a cone laced with beautiful kaleidoscopic imagery.
It doesn’t end there! The liquid-filled chamber is surrounded by panels of dichroic and colored glass. When you place a halogen desk lamp at the side of the chamber, the chamber glows with the color of the “window”. As you turn the chamber the tonal quality changes as each panel passes under the light. It is a beautiful image in scale and detail.
Each piece in the StarDust series is unique. Due to the difficulty and time involved in making each piece, no two are the same. Only a few were made.
