Jeffrey Balter was so enthralled with kaleidoscopes he began collecting them as quickly as he could locate them. In 1994 he hit the artist arena with a bang and continued to have impact from then on.
Jeffrey retired from his dental practice to pursue his passion for kaleidoscopes. Trained in structural engineering, Balter combines these skills with his 22 years of dental experience to create his kaleidoscopes. Balter's kaleidoscopes are clearly contemporary in style and design.
In Heart of Fire, Balter placed a plasma generator adjacent to a converging three-mirror equilateral system. A slide of textured and multicolored glass panels separates the two. By moving the slide back and forth, the energy from the plasma generator affects the colors and/or textures of the panels to alter the illusion. A "ghost like" image encircles the kaleidoscope image, creating an "atmosphere" around the spherical illusion. When viewed in a totally dark environment (although not necessary for viewing) you remove yourself from your frame of reference and are transformed to a different planet or time.
Heart of Fire measures 12 inches deep by 14 inches tall with a 24 inch panel expansion. US$3,000.
