We met Glenn Straub around 1984. He was just starting to make kaleidoscopes and wasn’t sure what direction his work was going into. We sat at our kitchen table in Marlboro, New Jersey listening to his ideas and offering feedback and input. He had an attaché case fitted to hold 6 or so hand-held kaleidoscopes. Birds and nature scenes were carved into the tube-shaped bodies. The workmanship was exquisite, but the birds had to go.

His handling of the wood, his ability to turn wood was obvious. His attention to detail in the clarity of the optics was astounding for someone so new in this arena.

Many hours passes as ideas flowed back and forth. Glenn left, full of excitement, to return a few short weeks later with sophisticated, streamline, contemporary parlour scopes. These elements have become trademarks of his work ever since. His first series was called the MS series - Glenn wanted to dedicate the scope to Marty thus, The Marty Scherer Series. Marty, who didn’t want the attention, offered the use of his initials. Marty did not want the recognition for his advice, and felt uncomfortable with his name on the scope. He appreciated the gesture, and to this day, Marty and Glenn continue to maintain a strong friendship.

Glenn and Ben Straub designed museum-quality kaleidoscopes for 15 years. Their pursuit of optical excellence has been realized time and again with each new series of kaleidoscopes they created over the years. Focusing their attention on the illusion created as well as on the objects that are being viewed, their works are filled with exceptional images of classical beauty.

Next, the Straubs created hand blown liquid-filled ampules. Liquid has always had an exciting effect on kaleidoscopic imagery.

Scherer Gallery has represented Glenn and Ben Straub since Glenn’s first kaleidoscope. In regard for this relationship, Glenn has created special kaleidoscopes for us through the years.
