Audrey Barna begins by collecting the eggs. She then punctures a hole on either end of the egg and blows the contents out. This then becomes food for the pigs. The eggs are then cut in half, sterilized and then coated with ten layers of a hardener. This provides the basis for her kaleidosocpes.
Once the hardener is throughly dry, Barna inserts the mirror system, the magnifying lens, and the object chamber into the egg. The egg is reassembled and is ready to be decorated. Barna's kaleidoscopes vary from one to the next. Thousands of beads adorn one, while decorative fabrics or images adorn others. The possebilities are limited only by her imagination.
It is important to note, however, that Barna has predetermined the object chamber and the exterior so that there is color harmony from the exterior to the interior. This is an imporatant element for Barna. It is this subtle detail that makes her work so special.
Each egg kaleidoscope varies in size and shape but measure approximately 3" x 4 1/2" US$400.
